Title: See you Again
Author: midorinohime
Story: One shot
Characters: Irene Bae || Brian Kang (Day6)
There are days so bad you'd want to hide from the rest of the world, go somewhere no one knows you and just enjoy the time spent alone. Maybe, with a cup of hot coffee and a slice of cake, you wish to drive all the stress away. To be clear of all your worries, to think of nothing and to forget being hurt.
That exactly is the kind of day I am having. Sitting alone at a coffee shop, with my laptop on, doing absolutely nothing but stare at it. I decided to seat at the innermost corner of the shop, choosing to occupy the edge of a long wooden bench paired with the same kind of long table. Sometimes, I'd browse some of the movie files I have to pass time. I have thought of doing some work but since I am trying to rid of the stress consuming me, I thought, "Why should I?" and toss the thought of work to the deepest part of my mind. Never once looking back.
After some time, I guess I got tired of staring at my laptop screen so I brought out a book and pretended to read and block the chatter of people around me by putting my earphones on and play a soothing song.
I put the song on repeat and listened to it endlessly, letting the words and voice of the guy wash over me. His voice was as refreshing as the wind that sends my hair a-dancing. The chilly air somehow a sign of a colder season to come.
I was staring so intently at the book- but never once reading even a word of it- that I did not notice someone already sat at the bench across mine. He cleared his throat which made me look up from my book and glance at the source of the sound.
He isn't really looking at my direction so I went back to wasting my time, turn my book to the next page just for the knack of it. He cleared his throat again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She looked up from her book again and curiously peeked at me. She must be wondering why I keep clearing my throat. Maybe, she is even thinking I probably have a cough and colds. Ahhh... what am I doing really?
I didn't realize that I was also staring back at her. "Uhmm, are you okay?" she asked.
I tried to open my mouth to answer her but my mind was filled with the thought, "Her voice is so beautiful..." it wasn't functioning well. Like a sweet song, it stayed on my mind. She was waiting, I can tell but since I didn't speak, she went back to reading once more.
I pinched myself and pushed myself to talk. "Are you waiting for someone?"
Her hand whose about to turn the page of the book stopped mid-way. Her eyes found their way towards mine. It was brown, light brown to be exact, orbs that seem to speak a thousand thoughts."No." she answered.
"Ahh, I see."
"Why? Are you?"
"Huh?" I didn't quite get her.
"I mean are you waiting for someone? Is this your favorite spot? I can move if you want?"
"No! No! It's fine. I am not waiting for anyone. Just trying to pass time alone."
"Okay," she said softly and stared at her book again. Her eyes aren't really moving so I can tell that she wasn't reading. I observed her every move, even the littlest detail engraved in my mind.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So... do you always stay here? To pass time?" I felt his eyes on me even when mine are glued on the book. I might as well talk to him if he's gonna be like this.
"Yeah. But this is the first time I saw you here," he muttered.
"Yup. I don't really want to stay at my usual hangout place. I don't want people who know me to see me."
"Why?"
"Just."
He looked confused at the same time curious. But, he didn't ask. He remained silent as he sipped his coffee.
I was thankful.
I don't really want to talk about it, not to a stranger, not to anyone.
I closed the book and put it in my bag. "Do you live around here?" I asked.
"No, but I work around here." he grinned, "So I hang out a lot here."
"Hmmm..." I stared at him, tilting my head a bit. "Do you have a habit of talking to just anyone who's alone and seems to be miserable?"
"No," He laughed, and then his face became serious. "Miserable?"
"Just having a bad day," I explained.
"Well, then, let's make your bad day a good one. Do you want to play a game with me?"
I was curious. "Sure. What game."
"Two Truths. One lie. We're going to tell three information about us and one of them is a lie."
"We'll try to guess which of three is the lie?" I asked.
"Yep, that's the idea. But we should have a consequence or something. if one of us loses."
"Okay." I thought of a consequence I would want him to do.
"Don't tell me yet. Just think of one and after the game, you tell me what you want me to do if I lose. Okay?"
"Alright. Game."
"Ladies first."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ladies first."
Her face was so seriously thinking of what to say. It was so fun observing her facial expressions. Her face is like an open book.
"I'm ready." She said.
"Shoot." I smiled.
"One, I am an only daughter. Two, I am the youngest. Three, I am an only child."
"Wow. Okay. Uhm..." I considered these three facts. She looks like she's been brought up like a princess with good manners and yet rebellious at some point. I'd guess... "The third one is a lie."
She looked surprised. "How in the world did you guess it right?!"
I shrugged looked smug for guessing right. "One point for me."
She pouted and tried to look pissed but it only made her look so cute. I stared at her pouting lips and had the urge to lean forward and kiss her. "Your turn," she said.
"One," I started, "I am an only child. Two, I am adopted. Three, I am an orphan."
"I'd say, three." she guessed.
"Ehhh," I lifted my arms to show a cross sign. "Wrong." I grinned.
"What?! So which is the lie?"
"One."
She was silent. I can tell that she's starting to feel sorry for me so I smiled at her. "It's fine really. I am adopted by a good family. My parents died in an accident while I was still a toddler. I have a younger baby sister as well."
"Where is she now? Is she with you?"
"Yes, she is. We are adopted together. Our mom and dad married late and they weren't blessed t have a child so they always tell us we are their gift sent by God. They said our parents are now in heaven and they must have requested that we are sent to them."
"Aww, they are so sweet."
"Yeah, they are. We're so lucky to be adopted by them." She was beaming at me. I didn't want anyone to feel sorry for me and my sister just because we are adopted and orphaned young. My sister and I are quite content with our lives right now. "Two points for me now. Ha!"
She totally forgot we were having a game.
"Okay. My turn. One, I am a writer. Two, I am a teacher. Three, I am a singer."
I stared at her. "Two of those are true? Oh my God, You're amazing."
She laughed. "What? I don't look like I can be one of those?"
"No. No." I shook my head. "I was just so surprised I am with someone so awesome."
She laughed harder. "You're funny. How can being a writer, or teacher or singer be awesome and amazing."
I realized something after having this game.
"You have to answer." she exclaimed.
"Oh, right." Which one could be the lie? "This is hard," I commented.
"is it? Not really. It is kind of obvious."
"No it is not." my voice was a bit louder this time and the people around us were looking at us. So I leaned forward and spoke in a hushed tone, "Are you sure there is one lie there?"
She wasn't expecting me to be this close to her. Her face flushed, eyes wide in surprise. My eyes glued to hers. "I think all of those are truths," I continued in a hushed voice.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I think all of those are truths," he continued. His warm breath fanning my face. I felt my face go warmer. His eyes never leaving mine. My heart beating erratically. I was panicking inside.
"Wrong." I blurted. "One point for me."
He looked shocked.
"What?" and finally moved away from me. "That is not possible!"
"Why?"
"I can say you are witty and smart enough to be a writer and a teacher. And you certainly have a voice of an angel to be a singer." he reasoned, winking at me.
I was dumbfounded. Is this guy flirting with me? Nah. Can't be.
"I am a writer, yes, but just an amateur one. I teach middle school students but I certainly am not a singer."
"I see. But... do you sing?"
I hesitated. "A bit?"
"Can you sing for me?" he asked with a puppy look. This guy is so adorable.
"Ahhh, no. I'm sorry."
"Please???"
"I really can't..." his expressions getting more and more charming. So I sighed and couldn't stop myself from saying, "Maybe, next time?"
He appeared to be so delighted, "Does that mean we will meet again?"
"I guess?"
"When?"
"Uhm, I don't know."
"Next week?"
"I am only free on Fridays."
"Agreed! Next Friday." He paused and beamed at me. "It's a date then."
A date, eh? My heart seemed to skip a beat and I sense myself feeling excited about seeing him again.
"Let's continue?"
"Alright. Your turn now."
"One, I don't have a girlfriend. Two, I have a girlfriend. Three, I want someone to be my girlfriend."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"One, I don't have a girlfriend. Two, I have a girlfriend. Three, I want someone to be my girlfriend." I tried to read her expression but it suddenly became void of expressions.
"You have a girlfriend?"
"Ehhhh!" I imitated her. "Wrong. I don't have a girlfriend but I want to court someone right now and ask her to be my girlfriend."
'Cool." She responded, without any hint of emotion.
"So I win." I continued, trying to shake off the sudden coldness from her.
"What do you want me to do then?" she asked.
"Nothing."
She looked confused. "What? Why?"
"I just want your number."
"My number?" she reiterated. "Okay. It's 0..."
"No no. Gimme your phone." I snatched her phone from the table and typed my number, pressed call and let it ring a few seconds before hanging up. "Just to make sure you give me your real number."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does he think I would give him a different number?
"Anyway, I need to go back to the office! Bye~"
I stared at his retreating form until he was out of sight. What in the world.
I felt my phone's vibration from the table, signaling that I just received a text message.
It was an unsaved number.
"Hi! It's me. I had a great time chatting with you. I hope you at least forgot about your bad day while I was with you. You must think I am a psycho or something for talking to a stranger but I couldn't help myself. My feet unconsciously walked towards you, my eyes sought to see you smile, my ears wanted to hear your voice. I know it's early to say that I like you but it seems like I really feel that way towards you. More so after talking to you.
I am looking forward to next Friday. You can bring a friend if you want. If you feel like I am being a stalker or something. haha. But I am not really.
I want to know you more. I want to talk to you again. I want to see you again."
I didn't know what to say and so I didn't respond. I just gaped at the message for many minutes. What should I say?
I almost dropped my phone when it vibrated once again.
"Did I scare you? Sorry. Please meet me again? I promise that will be the last if you are uncomfortable with me."
"Sorry. I just read your message." I lied. "You're so funny. Are you actually confessing to me via text? Do you expect me to believe you?"
There's a hint of playfulness in my text but I really wanted to know if he's serious.
"Heol. Okay. Don't believe it. I'll prove it this Friday."
"You haven't even told me your name yet."
"I'm Brian. Brian Kang."
What are you doing? This is so not you. Talking to a stranger and agreeing to meet again. That is borderline crazy.
But, he seemed like a decent guy.
"See you next week, Brian." I typed.
"And, Brian..."
"Yes?"
"Thank you for putting my mind off my bad day. I appreciate it a lot. You made me laugh today."
"My pleasure..."
"Don't you want to know my name?"
"Not yet...."
"Why?"
"So I'd have a reason to see you again for the third time?" he included a 😜 in his text.
"Ha! It's Irene. Irene Bae."
"Yah! I told you not to tell me!"
I sent an 😝 emoji.
While he sent a ☺️.
"See you..."
"Now, I don't have an excuse to have a third date. 😢 "
"You don't need it."
"What do you mean?"
"See you...."
"Yah!"
"Go back to work!"
"Hehe. Yes, Ma'am."
I giggled, reading his text.
I am so looking forward to seeing him again next week.
"See you again..." I murmured.
