Part I.

“Sir, Black Star has just arrived.” There was a buzz of excitement around the room hearing the infamous senior assassin’s name. Only a few have seen her for she was always sent for a class A mission but they have heard of all her escapades and how she managed to accomplish everything without a sweat. She usually goes on a mission alone. But this time, they heard the Black Star has finally failed and it was a pretty big mission as well. The Black Hole isn’t thrilled to hear the news.

“Send her in as soon as she walks in.” Dead Heart, the head assassin ordered as he waved his hand for the other occupants of the room to leave before his celebrity comes.

They all bowed before leaving, feeling quite disappointed for they’ve thought they’d finally get a chance to meet her. One failed attempt didn’t really change the fact that Black Star is still the number one assassin although she’s a woman. They’ve pictured her as bulky and scary, but some who had managed to get a glimpse of her once said it wasn’t so. They say that she looked so delicate you’d think twice to even hurt her. She wears an eye mask, a black one where the eye holes were studded with diamonds, making half of her face hidden from everyone. Well, it’s not only her. There are actually three top assassins in their group, and only a number was lucky enough to see them. They were usually always away for the difficult missions.

Grim Onix, second top assassin boasts of his strength and fighting skills. They have heard of how he mercilessly kills the target and still never leaves a trace that would point to their group. But although he has top skills, he still couldn’t beat Black Star, which certainly brings the spotlight to the mysterious woman. He wears a silver skull-like mask on the right half of his face, making the people who see him cower in fear.

Last, but surely will never be least, is Forgotten Sapphire. Her silky black hair is tainted with streaks of blue and white and her curvy body is clad in a tight black leather pair of pants and top. Her mask covers the left part of her face. It’s a mask resembling half face of a white cat, the eye hole where her left eye should be seen is covered by the bluest Sapphire, black gemstones were streaked down the white unnerving face like tears.

Black Star, Grim Onix, and Forgotten Sapphire. The three top assassins of Tombstone, their association’s name. They became the number one group people call when they needed a clean accomplished kill. Before, Dead Heart was the number one assassin but he decided to turn it over to his apprentice and not even once did he regret his decision. Black Star was the best thing that had ever happened, accomplishing mission after mission without a hitch, to Tombstone and ever since then Grim Onix and Forgotten Sapphire strived to get her position; hence, the birth of the Deathly Gems.

There was a soft knock on the big oak doors of Dead Heart’s crib, and without waiting for his assent to enter, it was thrown wide open revealing a petite woman, head held high with confidence, leaving the few people guarding the doors with awestruck faces. Her footsteps were so light that you’d think she’s gliding, and her little dainty feet don’t touch the marble floor. She walked so gracefully, through the doors. And just like Forgotten Sapphire, she wears a tight leather pair, only, her top reveals her small belly button. Little black stars were tattooed around it.

“Close the doors,” Dead Heart grumbled at the guards still standing with their eyes locked on the goddess-like figure who just entered. Her long wavy brown hair trailing behind her as she continued her way in the room, bowing before the head assassin. “Explain.”

A soft sigh escaped from her as she slowly looked up straight into her mentor's eyes. “I’m sorry.”

Dead Heart squinted his eyes at her. “I’m sorry? That’s all you can say?” he asked. “That’s a class A mission, Black Star!”

“I know, I’ve done many a mission like this. However, I can’t do it. No, let me change that. I won’t ever do it!” She hissed, eyes flashing angrily. “He’s just a kid!”

“I trusted you to act as professionally as you could, Black Star. This is a direct mission from the Black Holes and a direct order is a direct order. You just have to kill the person on that file and that’s it.”

“But why? He’s just a child!”

“A Black Hole’s order is absolute, no one questions it. Not me, not anyone, not even you.”

“If you won’t tell me the reason then I won’t do it.” She stubbornly concluded. That was the moment when the other two of the Deathly Gems decided to appear.

A hearty giggle from the voluptuous assassin escapes from her pouty lips as she sat on the Dead Heart’s desk, annoying Black Star more. “Don’t tell me you’re finally losing your touch little girl?”

“Perhaps you should just hand over the mission to me?” Grim Onix suggested, a smirk forming on his lips.

“No, she has to do this. No one backs out from a given mission. Not the number one Gem in Tombstone! Got it?!” Dead Heart’s voice thundered inside the office. Then he sighed, “I told everyone you failed to do the mission but I’m giving you another chance to accomplish it. And I won’t take no for an answer. In two months, you’ll hand over that kid to me, dead or dead.”

Her head bowed down. She refused to answer him nor acknowledge his words. For that reason, he continued talking, leaning back on his chair leisurely. “Anyway, we have another matter at hand. It is not a secret to all of you that there have been new recruits in our group. Some are promising, some can improve given proper training and some are, let’s just say, a waste of time and space of the organization. Right now, they are all training under the Panthers. However, there will be slight changes on the cubs’ training. Those who are ahead of others are going to be trained by the top assassins. All in all, there are four of them. I’m giving all of you an apprentice to shape, mold and polish into a fine Gemstone just like what I did to you and the other one, I’d give the right to choose who among you he wants to mentor him. He aced all the training earning him this privilege and a gem title afterward if his training goes well.”

They remained silent and unmoving as they waited for their head to continue. It has been a while since a prospect gem surfaced from the cubs. So they are all eager to see him.

“So when are we going to meet this guy?” Forgotten Sapphire asked, jumping down from the table, landing lightly on her two feet beside Grim Onix.

“As soon as… now…” And the door opened once again to reveal a tall guy, quite built but she could tell he’s a little younger than her. He has piercing dark eyes, which she couldn’t tell if it’s a dark brown, like a chocolate, or just black. It was cold and uncaring. And he seems to be staring at her just as she is. Black Star raised her eyebrow questioningly at him, challenging him and scaling his skills with just one look.

“For now you shall call him by his cub code, if he manages to pass your standards as a gem then, the Black Hole will give him a gem title, granted that he approves of it. But since you, cub6048, haven’t proven anything yet, you shall be called as such.”

The cub curtly nodded, his eyes still trained on the masked face of the infamous Star. “Sure.”

“Aren’t we a little rude, there cub?” Grim Onix drawled, earning him a painful nudge in the rib by an annoyed blue vixen. “What?!”

“Don’t you dare intimidate the hot cub, Onix. Besides, a little arrogance would do him great.” Sapphire uttered with a sultry voice.

The exchange seemed to go unnoticed for the cub was still burning holes, staring straight into Black Star’s soft brown eyes.

“Okay, so do you have other matters you want to discuss?” Dead Heart questioned as he rested his elbows on his desk.

“Yeah.” His voice was so manly, well, a little too manly.

“Then speak.” Onix was getting annoyed at the cub by the minute. He was staring too much at Black Star. No, he isn’t getting irritated because he has romantic feelings towards that fox, but rather the guy’s attitude irks him to the point that he is already planning and making sure he wouldn’t be branded a gem. The guy's husky voice broke him from his inner evil plotting.

“Do I get to choose my gem mentor now?”

The Dead Heart was taken aback by the cub’s straight forwardness. And right there and then, he decided that he likes this boy. “Go ahead cub, weigh your choices.”

“I’d choose the best of course. I want Black Star to be my mentor.”

Dead Heart’s grin stretched from ear to ear as the boy chose the right mentor he’d definitely recommend him. “Then Black Star it is.”
