Haven't Met You Yet

Chapter 7

Helping the Girl Forget

Past 2005

Dara’s POV

“Hi, Jiyong here.” he extended his hand to me, which of course I accepted. “How are you?”

“I am doing fine.” There was an awkward silence between us. I let go of his hand and gave him a small smile. “Come in.”

“Jiyong Hyung! Where did you go the whole day?” Sanghyun asked.

“Yah, Sanghyun! Don’t be so nosy.” Ruffling his hair a bit.

“It’s okay. No biggie, you know.” Jiyong said.

“Okay kids, I’ll prepare something for us. Why don’t you help Durami to set the table?”

“Dami is doing fine mom! Jiyong Hyung needs to tell me something.” Nudging Jiyong lightly.

“What is that young man? Is it more important than eating dinner?”

“Mom!” he whined. But when he saw the determined look on his mother’s face he followed her out of the living room to the kitchen.

I heard him sniggering a bit. “Jiyong, is it?” he stopped.

“Yeah. Kwon. Kwon Jiyong.” Giving me a lopsided smile. “Are you really feeling fine now?”

I nodded. “Ne, I am a bit shaken about it but I don’t want to be weak. Nothing happened so I just need to forget it. Oh speaking of that, I’d like to thank you for saving me. If it weren’t for you, they would’ve… they could’ve…” I couldn’t bring myself to say the words and sensing my now crumbling emotions; he held my hand for a bit and beamed at me.

“I already told your family that it is fine. And now I am telling it to you. It is fine. Nothing to worry about. All’s well.” He shrugged.

“Thank you…” I murmured nonetheless.

“Sure thing. You can pay me back some other time. Hehe.” He saw me raise an eyebrow then he chuckled. “I am just kidding. Come on. Let’s help auntie. I am starving!”

We ate what my mom prepared, Sanghyun telling us something about his day. Apparently, there was this girl he saw when he was playing at the park. He said that she looks so pretty and mysterious but he didn’t dare approach her. He claimed that she looked like she’s the same age as me.

Jiyong was quiet most of the time while commenting every now and then so as not to be called rude. I tried having some small conversation with him, too.

“Jiyong-shi,” he looked at me and waited for what I am about to say. “Uhm, Sanghyunh here told me something about you. Just wanted to make sure my brother is not fooling me.”

“What did he say?” he asked narrowing his eye at my brother. Sanghyun was now busy eating his food, trying act oblivious with what we’re talking about.

“Oh, He just said that you are a weirdo. He thinks that because you said that you’re from the future.” I laughed a bit. “And not that, he was totally telling me that you are out of your mind, doing things crazy people would do.”

“Is that so? I am not sure about being a weirdo and being out of my mind but I am sure that before I helped you I am in Japan, just came from a party and that it was 2009.” When he saw Sanghyun trying to hide his mocking grin, he added “yah, you can laugh all you want. Huh!”

“It’s just so ridiculous you know. This time travel thing and all. It’s just so not true.” Durami said, “It’s just so unbelievable, oppa. Sorry.” When did my sibling start calling him as such? Hmmm.

“Okay, you can ask me any questions that will happen in the future, these months. Ah, wait. What month is it now?”

“August,” I answered.

“Okay, I’ll tell you something that we’ll happen in a few days time.” He seems like concentrating on thinking of something. Then he snapped his finger. “I am quite sure this happened. There will be an annual Korean Music Festival this August 8, am I right?” he asked.

“Uhm. I think so,” I mumbled. I really don’t know for I am not updated in Korean Entertainment news.

“Yes there is!” Sanghyun exclaimed. “But you could’ve just watched it outside. It’s just a few days from now.”

“Yeah it is not what I am going to tell you. I remembered this incident because the news spread out before the music festival, august 6, I think.”

“Really? And what could it be?” Durami asked. She is already interested.

“A man will die…”

“Come on hyung, Of course every single day someone days in the whole world.” Sanghyun said, shaking his head.

“Listen first okay? He is Korean, twenty-eight years old, I think. And he died because of exhaustion.”

“Who dies just because of exhaustion?” Durami snorted.

“Dami…” I warned. She gave me an it-is-so-ridiculous look, as if it is a good reason why she’s interrupting someone.

“Well, the thing is,” Jiyong continued, interrupting our glaring exhibition. “The cause of his dead is really just ridiculous.”

“Just say it. Stop beating around the bush.” My brother is so impatient.

“Well, he began a marathon online gaming session on August 3 and died just after 50 hours of nearly nonstop gaming.”

We just stared at him. Nonstop gaming as a cause of death? “He didn’t even eat or drink water?” I asked, really not believing this news. Well, future news that is.

“Nope, not at all. I think I heard that time that he just leave his online battle simulation games to go to the bathroom and to take short naps on a makeshift bed. And maybe he didn’t eat nor drink because he doesn’t have money anymore.”

“Why not?” Durami asked, horrified. “He had money for playing games why not for food?”

“I think he quit his job just to play more games…”

“I am totally not believing that!”

“Then don’t. Just watch the news starting today…”

“Hey kids, stop the arguments now. We need to wake up early tomorrow.” Mom said.

“Where are we going?” I asked. I thought we will visit grandma again next week?

“I think Jiyong mentioned something about a beautiful place we can go to. Right, Jiyong-sshi?” Jiyong looked confused for a moment but when he and mother looked at each other he suddenly said,

“Ah! Yeah. I’d like to bring you somewhere, It’s really beautiful there. And it is near Busan so after having some good time there you can go visit your Grandma right away.”

What are they hiding from me? Hmmm.

Jiyong’s POV

Whew. I completely forgot that I promised Auntie in helping Sandara forget about what happened. I racked my brain to think of a good place where she would definitely enjoy herself.

“2005, 2005,” I continued to mumble while making myself comfortable on the couch. It is so hard to think of a place to go. “Where can I take her?” I muttered, exhausted of thinking and planning anymore. I looked at the wall clock and it is already three in the morning.

Their apartment is pretty neat, thank you very much to the ever generous Mrs. Park. She had been so good to me. I don’t know but even if I am in Korea, I can’t approach the people I know. It is so not going to be good, especially if the Jiyong from this year will see me. Knowing myself, I would totally freak out. And well, Mrs. Park already insisted that I stay (and help them ease Sandara’s pain).

Sandara. She is acting so normal that I think she’s trying to hide the fear and pain from all of us. She’s a very thoughtful girl. But that won’t help her from forgetting it. Of corse her siblings, Sanghyun (that little monster) and Durami, would help her get through.

Sanghyun is just so irritating sometimes. He likes annoying me and I have to thank the maknae (Seungri) for giving me a head start. Haha.

I suddenly felt lonely. I am missing them already.

“Hyung!” I uttered a small yelp. Sanghyun laughed so hard, clutching his sides. “You should’ve seen your face. Hahaha. Why didn’t I bring the camera with me?”

“Jeez, you little devil. What do you want?”

“ehehe. Just want to ask, where are we going later? I am so excited and I couldn’t sleep.”

“Oh that. Well, I don’t have any idea yet.”

“What?! But you said…”

“You know it is for your sister right?”

“Yeah.”

“I am kind of having a hard time thinking of where to take her that would make her forget or at least take her mind out of that path.”

After a moment of silence he said, “Well, she likes eating. So maybe we can go to a place where they serve her favorite food?”

“What’s her favorite food?” I asked.

“Sinigang…”

“…….”

“…….”

“……..”

“Sinigang.” He repeated.

“Uhm. I don’t really know what that is.”

“Of course you won’t know. It is a Filipino dish.” Grrr. I want to strangle this young man right here and now but of course that wouldn’t help me at all.

“Are you kidding me?!!! Do you really think there’s a place that would serve Filipino dish in Korea?!!!”

“There is.” I looked at him in disbelief.

“Now, man. Don’t joke around okay?”

“I am not! There really is! I think it is in Hyewha-dong.”

“Hyewha-dong?”

“Yes. But they are only open at Sundays. They call it Little Manila or something.”

“But it is just Thursday. We can’t possibly find any Filipino dish there right now.”

“Yeah I know.”

“So what now?”

“I don’t know. You think!”

“Let’s just go to Seoul Land.”

“But that is not near Busan.” Sanghyun stated, leaving me still not a clue on where to take them later.

Good heavens. This is just a headache. Where should we go? Oh, the dilemma of it all. With a last heavy sigh I drifted off to sleep and decided to just think about it later.
